I have known the Electronic Intifada for over twenty years. Since its beginning it has gone from strength to strength. As long as the Zionist settler-colonial project in Israel is allowed to continue, the EI would continue to be an absolutely vital media outlet.
The EI offer regular livestream broadcasts, to which anyone can subscribe. If you cannot watch them live, the recordings are freely available afterwards. You can also access the broadcasts, live or recorded, via Asa Winstanley’s Substack page: Palestine is Still the Issue.
Ilan Pappé was a guest on this particular episode. Everything he says validates the claims I have been making about Israeli society in my essays. Any former Israeli anti-Zionist who is fluent in Hebrew, and who is prepared to ‘air the dirty laundry’ on Israel, would echo and confirm the same. This is because we all know Israeli culture from within. We were a part of it, we served in the military, and were all brought up on Israel’s cult-like indoctrination. We can read, and listen to their media, and also read between lines.
I know there is a great deal of information thrown at people these days. I struggle to keep up myself. If you do have a little bit of time and brain space, this recording is worth your while. Before Ilan comes on, there is an up-to-date report from the ground in Gaza by one of EI’s contributors there. It is heartbreaking and includes information you would not get from any TV channel.
A comment on paid subscriptions: Substack encourages writers to create paid subscriptions. They take a small cut to enable them to provide this otherwise free-to-use platform. A few readers have pledged money for monthly or yearly subscriptions, to which I am grateful. But for now I am holding back on monetising my Substack channel.
Instead, below you will see a ‘buy me a coffee’ button. If you haven’t seen it before, it is a way of offering a small donation to freelance writers, and others who provide similar services that are not paid work. It is entirely voluntary. Payments are processed securely on the ‘Buy Me A Coffee’ site, using Stripe, and I believe people can keep donations anonymous if they wish.
Thank you for reading my work!
Thanks Avigail. I just finished Pappe's segment which is just over an hour long. He adds some history (of course) that I wasn't aware of regarding Herzl's early tactics in creating and promoting imperialistic zionism and some rich context about the corrosive actions of AIPAC in the US and the israeli lobby around the world. I do like that he is neither an optimist nor a pessimist but rather hopeful that the destruction we are seeing is the result of tremendous fractures occurring in zionism that could bring much less support for it around the world.
Thanks for all you do!
Thanks, Avigail. I actually listened to the whole thing (almost 3hrs!) while out for a walk in the nearby Lake District on Thursday. I wouldn't normally tune into any one programme for so long, but it was compulsive listening and I can wholeheartedly recommend it to your audience. As you say, the section from Ilan Pappé was particularly good!
