It’s so strange but wonderful to hear other people say this! Science is a belief system no different from any other. It is based on unquestioned assumptions which become indoctrination. I have both a science and philosophy background, so this became obvious to me decades ago, but most people have never thought about it. They can't imagine any other world view, just as they can't imagine anything other than capitalism, violence or colonialism.
Glad you feel validated. You might really enjoyed reading the Galileo Commission’s Report, which is a fantastic document. Science that is based on an unsubstantiated belief, is called ‘scientism’ and that is how it referred to in the SNM/GC circles. Modern science was a reaction against religion, but instead of offering something better, it simply replaced one belief system with another, complete with its own orthodoxy and punishments for dissent. A bit cultish in itself. And, yes, I think that only a materialist science can end up helping genocides, destruction of the Earth, abuse of animals allegedly for our benefit, and colonialism. Behind every vile idea that is destroying anything good in the world there are very highly educated people who make it possible. I wrote about this in the chapter ‘Ingenuity Without Ethics’ in my short book, Therapy Without A Therapist. Thank you for your comment. Can I ask why you say it is ‘strange’ to hear other people say this??… No urgency to respond. Just curious.
I think it is why I have started cowriting fiction with another author - his attempt to make me write faster! Maybe one day I'll cowrite more of my non-fiction too.
That's excellent, I agree totally! By strange I just mean I rarely hear people talk about this, and if I raise it, even people whose opinions I respect in most other areas can sometimes surprise me with their dogmatism or unimaginative regurgitation of a world view without recognising it as such. I have a folder on my desktop of notes for a book, and the opening chapter folder is all about the impossibility of certainty/nature of reality, the second is on how everything is a belief system. From there it goes on to bodily autonomy, democracy and power, equality and inequality etc. I jokingly call it my Beliefs Bible. :-) May never get written, or might just turn it into blog posts for Everything is Political. (As with my fiction author career, I have huge numbers of books planned and researched to a degree, but I tend to only get one finished and polished and edited every couple of years ...)
